Overview

"Glory one Earth" was a relatively simple design for the chandler. It was staged in traverse with 4 banks of seating made from 2 heights of Steel deck. The Designer wanted masking right round the venue to give the audience a feeling of being enclosed and more immersed in the drama. To do this we used the in house tab track to mask off sides behind the seating banks as well as the upstage wall. To cover the main in house seating bank we used 11 metres worth of scaff and a 13x4.5 metre border flown to the same height as the tab track. To create the upstage crossover I used 12 metres of scarf then to make the centre gap I had to use two 16x5 borders. this gave a lot of horizontal excess so required a lot of folding back but was the only cloth that was wide enough with enough drop.

There was 4 set elements in this show, the first was the "Pulpit". This was made by construction to replicate an old church pulpit, it was created in two parts for transportation reasons. Above the pulpit was the "Corbals" these were old church pillars from reset scenery that the designer wanted to be flown upside down. To do this I drilled a 10.5mm hole through the body of the coral and put a M10 120mm bolt through and then a half doughty coupler on the end of this, then attached them all onto a scarf pipe from the catwalks.

The "Dais" was a 4 tier platform with 200mm steps to each tier. The main structure for this was steel deck on 200mm legs with ply outfits made by construction to meet the sizes of the designers drawings. Behind the Dais was 3 flats from reset scenery to create a back wall, this was supported with adjustable braces and two drift pickups up to the catwalks above. Surrounding the flats was curtains made by props that were to be tracked on and off by the cast, to do this I hung a 5 metre length of unit track from a two 2 metre scaff pipes and used ratchet straps as safeties, then used a truss border to mask it all off.
