Gemma is from Aberdeen, has a BA Honours in Fine Art, where she specialised in painting at Grays School of Art and graduated in 2001. In 2002 she volunteered to work at an International boarding school in Denmark where she assisted in many duties including teaching Art and English. It was a great experience and she managed to travel to various different countries as educational trips with her classes. It did lead to paid employment but after three years she felt it was time to move on.

In 2005 she returned to Scotland and decided Glasgow would be a good place to call home for a while. She worked for two years as an Outreach/Youth worker in Govan before applying to RSAMD where she is currently studying design. Her aim is to make a living from being creative and hopes that her training in Set and Costume design is going to open many doors and give her the career she seeks.

Gemma gained a lot from her first year at the Academy and realised she has an interest for Costume. Gemma has always loved dressing up for fun and would really like to explore some of the ideas she has for costumes that make you laugh. She hopes to get as much as she can out of her time at the Academy and is always looking out for extra experience.
In 2002 I volunteered to work at an International boarding school in Denmark. It was unlike most British boarding schools, I would describe it as an alternative style of education. It focussed on the arts, sports, social education and travelling. My duties included assisting in teaching English and Art classes, supporting young people through projects and daily tasks. It lead to paid employment and more responsibility each year but after three years I felt it was time to move on.

Gemma would like to make exciting thrilling theatre that is going to use a range of different media which should hopefully encourage new audiences. She would like to give theatre a right good shake up!!!
In 2005 I returned to Scotland and chose Glasgow as my home. Shortly after returning I got a job as an Outreach/ Youth worker in Govan where I worked in a drop in project for young people. My role included providing information and support for young people and the community on a wide range of subjects. Taking part in the running of two busy youth clubs, going into schools offering information surgeries and organising the costumes for the Govan Parade. In the two years I worked there I made the decision to apply to the Academy. I knew the direction I was heading in was not for me and felt that my best skills were not being used.

I have chosen to focus on set and costume design however I am seeking a creative career and want to gain as broad a range of experience as I can. I feel very privilege to be here and intend to make the most of it.

Hi, I grew up in Aberdeen, when I left school I studied Art/ Painting at Grays school of Art. I graduated with a BA Honours in Fine Art in 2001.

Other interests of mine include music, the arts, people, travelling, dressing up...you just cannae beat a bit of silliness from time to time :)
